Old Friends

Two recent portraits of a couple of dear friends that I’ve known for a very long time.

Gospel and Soul in the City of Lights

When thinking of Paris, gospel music isn’t usually among the first thoughts that colors the imagination.

But over the past few weeks, I’ve had the wonderful pleasure of spending some time with an amazingly talented French gospel group ,Generation Gospel, as they prepared for a concert in June. When they asked me to make their portrait I was thrilled. The final product, though not perfect, turned out great. And fortunately I was able to execute the shoot somewhat comprehensibly in French…whew.

Action Bronson

Saturday night I photographed rap artist Action Bronson at the Gramercy Theater. A cool little side note is that he is a chef by day, and food is often referenced in his songs. I took 5 minutes to make a portrait of him backstage before his performance and then photographed the excitement.

HORSE EXERCISE TRAINER TAMMY FOX

Tammy Fox, exercise horse rider at the Belmont Race Track in Elmont, N.Y., June 10, 2011. (Mylan Cannon/The New York Times)

So I was given the chance to go to the Belmont racetrack the day before a race. The assignment was to photograph some of the women exercise trainers (for the horses). I grabbed a few frames of Tammy Fox at work and I had a five minute shoot with her in the stable. The light was great so I grabbed a nice cliché wide portrait of her and then pulled in a little to get a really nice close-up. Turned out O.K. despite me standing shoe-deep in mud and constantly looking over my shoulder to make sure a horse wasn’t about to trample me… Can you tell it was my first time in a horse stable?
